Industrial hemp: a strategic driver for Uruguay’s new bioindustry
Could this be the cornerstone of a new green and regenerative economy for Uruguay?
Uruguay is facing a unique opportunity. In an increasingly sustainability-driven global context, where traceability and low-impact products are key, industrial hemp stands out as a strategic resource capable of fuelling a new national bioindustry.
At Landopp, we’re working to turn this potential into reality. We are focusing on transforming hemp biomass into compostable bioplastics that can replace fossil-based materials in secondary and tertiary packaging. However, this is not an isolated story. It is part of a broader movement that could transform the country’s production model.
Hemp has a wide range of high-value applications, including functional foods, bioplastics, construction materials, textile fibres and bioenergy. It’s a regenerative and adaptable crop that is ideal for rotation systems and capable of improving soil health. In short, it is a powerful tool for productive diversification and rural resilience.
Companies such as Goland are already using hemp seed protein in their range of healthy foods. Meanwhile, researchers, technicians and entrepreneurs are paving the way towards a decentralised, circular industry with significant export potential.
However, for this ecosystem to thrive, several challenges must be addressed, such as clearer regulation to distinguish industrial hemp from psychoactive cannabis, improved access to formal financing and local processing infrastructure, and a coordinated R&D roadmap to facilitate the transition from prototype to market.
At Landopp, we believe that hemp should be seen not as an alternative crop, but as the foundation of a new green industry for Uruguay — one that will generate employment, innovation and a strong global presence. We're not just talking about raw materials. We're talking about bio-based solutions with a Uruguayan signature.
The time to act with vision is now. Hemp is ready. Are we?
